INTERNET CAFE!!

Hi all

couldnt sleep last night. my intentions were to be asleep by 12:30- 1 am but nights are really hard for me. all these thoughts going through my head and their mainly about home and the people there.. i mean the days i can distract myself from being away but nights are just really really hard.. ugh..

i took the metro to nevsky prospect yesterday (by the way the escalators in the metro stations- your on it for like 10 mins lol) i really like it there because there are alot of people, alot of shops and resturants, and pretty buildings to see.. i have still yet to figure out a way to upload my pics to these comps. in the internet cafes but just be patient ill figure something out.

some interesting things before i forget:
-there are wild dogs that just walk around!
-everyone here has like a prepaid phone- there are little machines every so often at a shop or by the metro where you can add money to your card.. cool huh?

so as i was walking around nevsky yesterday i talked to so many russian people (the employees in the shops of course - not strangers) and its nice that i have enough words that i know where i can get my point across but when they reply (so fast) i try to understand and sometimes i do but mostly i just smile and say spaseeba (thank you). i wish you could have seen me in this one cosmetic store trying to find a blow dryer (impossible to find here!) i said to the woman ya nada .. (i need..) ya gavareet pa rooski ploka (i speak russian badly).. so then i said in english HAIR DRYER and made my had into the shape of a gun almost and went "SHHHHHHHHHHHHHH" (like the sound the blow dryer makes) and put it against my hair hahaha she thought i wanted shampoo.. then i was making hand motions like OK you know how you have a curling iron and twisted my hair in my finger and you know how you have a straightner and pulled my hair straight.. then i just gave up bc she didnt understand what i was trying to find.. i dont understand why its so hard to find things here i mean you would think a blow dryer is something everyone uses.

well since i didnt fall asleep until around 4:30 am last night i woke up around 11:40 am (so did my roomie) so we went running and then came back to the room to eat brunch (also conserving money lol) and we met up with peter to come to the internet cafe and go to the grocery store. we all pretty much decided we should cook food instead of buying out all the time.. that would be healthier anyway.. OH i tried a few russian dumplings last night. they were pretty good they had some type of meat in them i guess it was pork or beef- maybe both but they were pretty good they reminded me of tortellini..

so my plan for today is to do some necessary shopping and read some books that im supposed to have read for class (starts tomorrow) hopefully ill be exhausted at the end of the day so that i can sleep tonight.. thats my goal as long as im exhausted at the end of the day and i dont have to think then thats good!

alright see ya later
-M.

  1. Ok let me try this again...I just tried to post a comment and screen went blank on me.

Awwwwwwwwww Shell please don't worry about things at home it will all be here as you left it when you get home. I can't believe you are having such a hard time finding a blow dryer that is crazy. Don't give up you will find one. Hey why don't you call Nakita and ask him for advice on that. Can't wait to see some pic's. Sounds like you are staying busy. Glad to hear you are cooking for yourself. Did you break out the peanut butter yet? I think that is really great that you are already getting your exercise in. That will help your mind be at ease.
Mark and I went to Arianna's game. I am sorry to say they lost in overtime. Arianna was so upset my heart was breaking for her. I met her coach from Stockton. I thought that was great that she came to the game. It was so hot and sunny I really got burnt up. OUCH!!!

I will call Dad and ask him to try and call you. It sounded like you really want to hear from him.

Please try to rest easy tonight. Is there anything I can do? I will call you on Tuesday on my lunch break so it should be around 8pm your time. Love you and miss you. xoxoxoxo

  2. Hiiii MEEECHELLE! ohmygosh about the hair dryer - haha you would think it would be so easy to find in a store! thats insane man. but as i was reading the way you trying to describe how to use a hair dryer, i pictured what you looked like doing it and it made me giggle.

michelle, i know its hard to get adjusted to a new and strange environment..but, just try to ease your mind and know that we are all doing fine back at home and there is nothing to worry about. its hard to tell yourself to not let your mind wonder at night, but you will get through it. hey - youve only been there a few days now! once more days pass by, youll be quite fine and sleep will come easy.

and oh G what food made you sick?! any cabbage? and watch out for those wild dogs ahh. i cannot wait to see some pictures, that stinks about the place and your bed, but im sure the people youre with are making it a fun experience!

  4. Michelle,
I think they make Russian dumplings from Wild Dog meat. Just kidding!

I'm sure the first few days are a big adjustment due to the time difference and home sickness. This too shall pass. All is A=ok on the home front except St Joe lost in the State finals to Monclair Kimberley 3 to 2. Just think you'll be home in 43 days and we will all smoother you with hugs and kisses. Enjoy your time in one of the oldest cities in Russia (300 years)and for goodness sake please figure out how to upload the pictures. I'm dying to see SPG through your camera lense.
We love you and we love your blog. Keep us up to date.

  5. Alright, it has taken me forever to figure out how to post a comment on this thing, butttt, okay, wild dogs sounds like a flippin' nightmare. Are they scruffy? Are they like the Atlantic City cats? It is really beautiful over there?

You and electronics aren't getting along too well, huh? It's okay though. Your hair looks beautius au naturale anyways! The dumplings sound yummy. Get a recipe book!

You're really one of a kind and your out going-ness is doing you well it seems! Communicating will be way easier if you keep practicing like you are haha. I'm glad you have someone to travel around with and that you're having fun. Try not to be too anxious. Before you know it you'll be sleeping like a baby. =) You'll be great, you little traveler you. I think of you always and wonder what you're up to. Love reading your blog. Love you to pieces!
    Love, Laura
